Your keepsake to keep their memory alive,Memorial Keepsake for Dad: Preserving a Father’s Memory in Metal

A Father’s Memory

Ms. Wen, a client living in the United States, sent us a lock of her father’s hair along with an old photograph. She wanted us to preserve both in a meaningful keepsake—a tribute to her father and the life he devoted to his work.

The photograph shows New China Shipyard, the place where her father spent nearly his entire professional life.

Ms. Wen hoped to keep this piece at home as a lasting memorial. To bring her vision to life, we chose a 15-centimeter metal disc and carefully recreated the old photograph by hand.

The original image was extremely blurry, so there was no simple way to reproduce every detail. We had to rely on observation, memory, imagination, and patience—restoring the image little by little.

Because of the size of the piece, much of the finishing work had to be done by hand. It was physically demanding, but knowing that Ms. Wen had entrusted us with something so precious made every step worthwhile.

After 25 days of careful handwork, the image was finally completed.

Then came the most delicate part: incorporating her father’s hair into the artwork.

Each strand had to be carefully placed along the dark lines of the image, preserving the appearance of the original artwork while keeping the hair naturally integrated into the design. It required extraordinary patience and attention to detail.

Ms. Wen later shared her father’s story with us.

At the age of 18, her father was admitted to Guangzhou Machinery Technology School with outstanding grades. Two years later, he was assigned to New China Shipyard as a marine mechanical engineer.

He spent his youth, middle age, and later years at the shipyard. He witnessed its growth, its prosperity, and eventually its decline. After decades of dedicated work, he retired with honors in 2008.

Later in life, he moved to the United States to help his daughter care for his four beloved grandchildren. Ms. Wen said she spent 15 beautiful and unforgettable years with her father in New York before he passed away unexpectedly.

As a craftsman myself, I deeply admire the spirit of a man who devoted his entire life to one profession.

Ms. Wen understood her father and chose to remember him in a way that reflected who he was and what he loved.

And through this keepsake, her father continues to accompany his family in another, very special way.

Not just a photograph.

Not just a keepsake.

But a lifetime of memories, preserved in metal, together with a small part of the person she loved.
